In case you didn’t know, two Nigerians
picked up Grammy Awards at this
year’s ceremony. Kevin Olusola and
Cynthia Erivo. So, if you are still sad at
Wizkid and Kah-Lo not winning any
award, this should cheer you up.
Kevin who is a member of acapella
group Pentatonix won the award for
Best County duo/group with other
members of his group.
Cynthia on the other hand won the
Grammy for Best Musical Theatre
Album for being among the cast who
recorded the musical The Color Purple
where she played the role of Celie
Harris.
Born to Nigerian immigrants in
Stockwell, South London on January 8,
1987, Cynthia initially wanted to study
music psychology at the University of
East London. However a year into her
degree, she applied and subsequently
trained at prestigious Royal Academy
of Dramatic Art.
Apart from her award winning role at
in The Colour Purple, she also starred
as Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary
Clarence in the U.K. tour of Sister Act.
She will also star alongside Academy
award winner Viola Davis in popular
director Steve McQueen’s film
Widows to be released later this year.
After that, she will tackle the title role
in Harriet, a biographical film about
American abolitionist Harriet
Tubman.
